Have you ever thought of Joshua as a Camp Director. We know he was a great leader and a great military general. The great WWII General Douglas McArthur listed Joshua as one of the great military leaders in world history. But, I feel the bottom line, he was a great Camp Director. Just think about this, he had to lead a traveling family camp through the wilderness for 40 years!

He was responsible for feeding them, providing quality programming, dealing with health issues, providing Risk Management coverage – making sure the encampment was safe and other various issues that Camp Directors have to deal with.

Why was Joshua so successful as a Camp Director? Four things stand out. First, Joshua had a worthwhile goal. Camp Directors, to be successful, you need to have a worthwhile goal. If you don’t know where you are going as a Camp Director how will you know when you get there? We know what Joshua’s goal was – to capture the land of Caanan. What are your goals? Stephen Covey in his book, the Seven Habits, emphasizes the fact that we all have to “begin with the end in mind.” Once you establish your goals for the camp facility, the summer camp, any new buildings that need to be built, equipment that needs to be purchased: the next step is to move towards that goal. So, the second step is to have a workable plan to meet your goals.

The third step of Joshua’s success was to build an effective team. This is the secret of success in all successful organizations. The building of a cohesive camp staff both summer and year round is crucial to the success of any camp director.

The final step in Joshua’s success, to the promised victory is especially important. Joshua’s success was tied to an obedient heart. Joshua 1:8 The Message version “Ponder and meditate on it day and night, making sure you practice everything written in it. Then you’ll get where you’re going; than you’ll succeed.”

What was true for Joshua can be true for every Seventh-day Adventist Christian camp director. God’s word must be your guide.

May God bless all our camp directors as they enter into the greatest evangelistic program happening during the summer of 08.
